Education

Education is ideally a constant throughout one’s Jewish journey.  Children from a young age attend cheder, or religion school, to learn basic concepts and skills, and to meet other Jewish children.  Jewish teens continue to study to sharpen skills and learn to study the holy texts.  Adults continue to deepen their knowledge all the time.  Those who are interested in becoming Jewish through conversion, are treated to a ‘crash course’ intended to launch them into the mainstream of Jewish life.

One of Jewish Journeys’ key activities is to provide educational opportunities for all Jews and would-be Jews.

Attendance at a worship service is a prime opportunity for Jewish education.

Given sufficient interest, we would be happy to start a children’s cheder on the Gold Coast or elsewhere, or to assist or advise others interested in starting one.  Please enquire.

We currently, and continuously offer our signature course, (Re-)Discovering Judaism, in various locations as well as online via video teleconferencing.  This course is for adults who are interested in converting to the Jewish faith, in learning more about their own heritage, or just to satisfy a casual interest in Judaism.  The course meets one evening per week, for approximately one hour each session, over a period of six months.  Full information can be found here.

Many Jewish parents begin thinking about their children’s Jewish education as they approach the age of bar or bat mitzvah:  13 for all in a progressive community, 12 for girls in a traditional community.  See our ‘Lifecycles’ page for more information on bar/bat mitzvah.
